About this place

Last updated Aug 22, 2026

Malakal, once South Sudan's second-largest city, has been largely devastated by years of civil conflict. What remains today is a landscape of ruins — much of the city's infrastructure, including hospitals and key services, was destroyed between 2011 and 2015. A large United Nations refugee camp sits northeast of the former urban center, housing tens of thousands of displaced people.

  • Mid-October through February — the dry season offers the most favorable tropical conditions, with low rainfall, lower humidity, and comfortable sunshine.
  • Avoid the rainy season — pre-conflict, all roads to Malakal became unusable for ordinary vehicles during rains; current infrastructure is even more compromised.

  • Security coordination is essential — independent travel to Malakal is not recommended; any visit requires coordination with UN or military authorities.
  • Check official travel advisories — consult current government and UN security guidance before considering travel to this region.
  • Plan for self-sufficiency — with destroyed infrastructure, travelers should not rely on local hospitals, hotels, or services being operational.
