About this place
Makurdi is the capital of Benue State, set along the Benue River in North Central Nigeria. It is a political and administrative hub known as the region’s “food basket,” where the pace is slow and the streets reveal a deeply agricultural way of life. The city is predominantly Tiv, with Idoma, Igede, and Etulo communities adding to its cultural mix.
Travelers come less for luxury resorts and more for authentic local culture — homegrown cuisine, traditional dance, and cultural events. As a major north–south transit point, Makurdi is also a practical stop for overland journeys through Nigeria’s middle belt.

Planning Tips
- Arrange a local guide — navigating the city and negotiating fares is far smoother when someone familiar with the culture and language assists you.
- Travel during daylight — keep exploring to daytime hours to avoid poorly lit areas and potential street-level risks.
- Confirm fares in advance — ask a resident or let a Nigerian friend negotiate transport, as prices quoted to locals and visitors can differ sharply.
- Book buses early — major operators like Benue Links and associated companies leave early; check in on time to secure your seat.
