About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Mainz is the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, a historic city of about 225,000 where the Rhine and Main rivers meet. Founded as the Roman citadel Mogontiacum in 38 BC, it grew into an influential episcopal seat and a powerful center of trade. Today it is equally known as a major media hub, home to national broadcaster ZDF, and as the heart of the German wine trade.

The city's walkable core revolves around the thousand-year-old Cathedral of St. Martin and St. Stephan. Cobblestone lanes weave through the beautifully preserved Altstadt, while museums celebrate everything from Roman antiquities to the legacy of Johannes Gutenberg, the father of movable-type printing.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Explore the farmers' market at the cathedral — held on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, with local winegrowers selling on Saturdays until 16:00. It's a lively, social scene that doubles as a tourist attraction.
  • Wander the Altstadt — tucked behind the cathedral, the compact old town charms with its baroque church and rows of well-preserved Fachwerkhäuser (half-timbered houses).
  • Take a Rhine river cruise — several operators run cruises from Cologne or Koblenz to Mainz, with hop-on, hop-off options along the scenic Middle Rhine.
  • Catch the OPEN OHR Festival in May — a youth-oriented alternative festival at the Zitadelle with local music, creative workshops, and films; a three-day pass costs about €25.
  • Join the Johannisnacht midsummer festival in June — a St. John's Night celebration bringing street life and entertainment to the city center.

  • Mainz Cathedral (Dom) — construction began in 975, but most of the Romanesque structure dates to the 11th–13th centuries. The adjacent Dom und Diözesanmuseum showcases the church's historic wealth.
  • Gutenberg Museum — honoring Johannes Gutenberg, the father of modern printing, who was born in Mainz and developed the movable-type press here.
  • Landesmuseum — the state museum's archaeological collection spans 300,000 years of settlement history, with outstanding Roman artifacts from Mogontiacum.
  • Drusus monument — the massive cenotaph built for the Roman general Drusus still stands (unclad of its marble) inside the citadel.
