About this place
Mahajanga (also known as Majunga) is the main tourist destination in Madagascar, situated on the sunnier west coast along the Mozambique Channel. It is less affected by rain than destinations on the Indian Ocean coast, offering a more reliable tropical getaway. The city is famous throughout the island for its easy-going and friendly atmosphere.
With more than fifty hotels catering to every budget, Mahajanga welcomes everyone from families and groups traveling by bus from the capital Antananarivo (560 km via a well-paved road) to well-heeled tourists flying in from abroad, notably Mayotte. The city serves as the gateway to several nature parks, including the nearby Reniala Reserve, as well as Ankarafantsika, Bay of Baly, and natural wonders such as Cirque Rouge, Anjohibe caves, and the Katsepy peninsula.
