About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Magé sits on the north shore of Guanabara Bay, pressed against the foothills of the Serra do Mar in Greater Rio's Baixada Fluminense region. It’s a municipality that blends everyday local life with quiet echoes of Brazil’s imperial-era transport history.

This unassuming city holds a claim to fame: it was the starting point of the country’s first railway. While much of that historic line is now deactivated, sections remain operational, and the area offers trails into the lush Atlantic Forest that reward those looking to step off the well-worn tourist path.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Getting there by train — From Rio’s Central do Brasil station, take the train to Gramacho or Saracuruna and transfer for Magé; bus and van services also depart from the city center.
  • Road access — The main highways from downtown Rio are the BR-116 (Presidente Dutra) and the BR-493 (Rio-Magé), providing fairly direct driving routes.
  • Forest hike preparation — If tackling the Caminho do Ouro trail, wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as you’ll be in an unexplored region of the Atlantic Forest with few services.
