About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Madurai, on the banks of the Vaigai River in Tamil Nadu, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Formerly the capital of the Pandyan kingdom, it has been a major settlement for two millennia and remains a vibrant commercial and cultural hub in South India. Known as the "Temple City" and the "City of Jasmine," Madurai draws visitors with its deep-rooted Tamil heritage, colorful festivals, and legendary hospitality.

The city's heart is the magnificent Meenakshi Amman Temple, a sprawling complex crowned by four towering, sculpture-encrusted gopurams. Beyond the temple, Madurai serves as an excellent transit point for journeys further south and a gateway to Tamil Nadu's temple trail. Whether you are a pilgrim, a history lover, or a food explorer, the city rewards those who take time to wander its bustling bazaars and quiet sacred spaces.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Book train tickets in advance through IRCTC or authorized agents; the rail journey from Chennai takes 8–10 hours and is the preferred route.
  • Use bus number 10A to connect between the airport and Periyar bus stand if you prefer public transport; the airport is about 15 km from the city center.
  • Purchase the ₹50 special-darshan ticket at the Meenakshi Temple to significantly reduce queue time for the inner shrine.
  • Leave mobile phones and cameras at your hotel when visiting the temple, as they are not permitted inside (lockers are available but valuables are safer at your accommodation).
  • Carry small change for local bus fares; familiarizing yourself with bus numbers or asking the conductor will help you navigate the city's four main bus stands.
  • Drink only sealed bottled water and favor restaurant meals over roadside eateries to avoid stomach upsets, and stay hydrated with coconut water during hot days.
  • Dress conservatively, especially at religious sites and during festival visits, to respect local customs and avoid unwanted attention.
