About this place
Machilipatnam, also known historically as Masulipatnam, is a small port city on the central coast of Andhra Pradesh with a layered past dating to the 14th century. Once a thriving seaport that drew Arab, French, British, and Dutch traders, it served as the British East India Company's first trading post on the Coromandel Coast. Today it is a quieter fishing and weaving town, known above all for its centuries-old Kalamkari block-printed and hand-painted textiles — intricate cotton fabrics dyed with vegetable and mineral colors that still support a local artisan community.
The city offers a modest but genuine slice of coastal Andhra life: long, pale-sand beaches, temple pilgrimages, Buddhist-era ruins within day-trip range, and a local food scene built around seafood, sweets like Bandar Laddu, and seasonal mangoes. It remains connected by rail and road, with the nearest airport about 70 km away in Vijayawada. Infrastructure is basic and the historic port has been idle for years, though periodic state plans aim to revive it.
