About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

The East Bank of Luxor is the vibrant heart of the modern city, anchored by two of Egypt's most spectacular temple complexes: Karnak and Luxor Temple. For millennia, this side of the Nile has been the primary settlement for the living, a role it continues today as the main hub for hotels, restaurants, and tourist services.

The city is laid out simply along four main roads connecting the temples. The scenic Corniche el-Nil hugs the riverfront and links most major attractions, while inland streets like Sharia Karnak and Sharia al-Mahatta lead to the railway station, souqs, and a range of accommodations. Recent widening of the Corniche has improved access for visitors arriving from Red Sea resorts.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Luxor Temple at night — experience this beautifully lit monument after dark, when it takes on an intimate, atmospheric mood with far fewer visitors than daytime.
  • Sunset on the Corniche — watch the sun sink over the Nile from the terrace of the Old Winter Palace hotel, accompanied by a drink and the lively chatter of thousands of roosting birds in the riverside trees.
  • Support local animal charities — visit the Brooke Hospital for Animals or Animal Care Egypt, both dedicated to helping working animals, where donations or purchases from their shop are welcomed.
  • Sugarcane juice stop — sample a freshly pressed sugarcane drink at one of the many fruit juice shops, a refreshing and authentic local treat.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Base yourself on the East Bank — nearly all accommodation and dining options are here, and you'll likely arrive via the railway station right in town.
  • Use local SIM cards — visit the Vodafone shop on Television Street to purchase a holiday SIM and avoid high roaming fees on international calls.
  • Visit telephone offices for calls — four public telephone offices around town, including a 24-hour branch on Sharia Karnak, can save you from steep hotel charges.
  • Carry small change — you'll need exact coins if you plan to buy postage stamps or pay for small items at juice shops.
