About this place

Last updated Jul 20, 2026

Lutsk is one of Ukraine's most ancient cities, with origins around 1000 CE along a bend of the Styr River. The historic core, known as The Old Lutsk, sits on an island formed by the river and its tributaries and still reflects centuries of evolving fortifications. The city was once a powerful center of the Kievan Rus kingdom and later the medieval Grand Duchy of Lithuania, hosting a famous meeting of European monarchs in 1429.

Today Lutsk is a regional capital in Western Ukraine with roughly 221,000 residents. Its proximity to the Polish border has made it a hub of international trade, and a post-war industrial boom brought rapid growth. Visitors can expect a blend of deep history—especially the well-preserved castle and numerous religious buildings—alongside a modern, walkable city with convenient public transport.
