About this place
Luton is a large, multicultural town in Bedfordshire, about 35 miles north of central London. With a population of roughly 200,000, it was once known for straw hat-making and later for Vauxhall car production. Today it is best recognized as the home of London Luton Airport, a major hub for budget and charter flights across the UK and Europe.
While many travelers pass straight through, the town itself offers a handful of low-key attractions and a surprisingly practical base for exploring nearby countryside. The surrounding area includes walking spots like the Clappers and the Chiltern-edged Dunstable Downs. A large South Asian community brings excellent curry houses, interesting temples, and an annual carnival to the local calendar.

Planning Tips
- Use the DART for airport transfers — The Luton DART connects the airport terminal to Luton Airport Parkway station in minutes, running 24/7 and linking to fast trains to London St Pancras.
- Public transport beats driving into London — Trains from Luton and Luton Airport Parkway are frequent and accept Oyster and contactless cards; driving into central London is slower and costly.
- Check carnival dates carefully — Luton Carnival dates are not fixed; plan ahead and confirm the schedule before booking travel if attending is a priority.
- Book minicabs or licensed taxis at night — After dark, especially past midnight, a pre-booked cab is the safest way to return to your hotel.
- Leave rival football shirts at home — To avoid unwanted attention, do not wear Watford FC or Millwall FC colors in town, particularly on matchdays and weekend evenings.
