About this place
Luoyang is an ancient city in western Henan province, China, often called the "City of Emperors." It served as the capital for nine ruling dynasties, including the Eastern Han and part of the Wei period, and was the eastern terminus of the Silk Road. Today, it's a vibrant modern city of over 7 million people where thousands of years of history are woven into the urban fabric, drawing visitors to its profound cultural and religious sites.
The city's legacy is immediately accessible. In the southern Longmen Grottoes, thousands of Buddha statues and reliefs carved into limestone cliffs stand as a testament to the artistry of the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties. To the east, the White Horse Temple, one of China’s oldest Buddhist sites founded in 68 CE, offers a serene escape and a direct link to the faith's introduction to the country. These landmarks, alongside the temples and ruins scattered throughout the city, make Luoyang a powerful reminder of Chinese civilization's heartland.
