About this place
Lübeck is a compact, walkable city on the Baltic coast, famous for its red-brick Gothic architecture and long Hanseatic history. Its medieval Old Town (Altstadt) sits on an island surrounded by the Trave River and was named a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city skyline, dominated by seven church spires, rises above a mix of faithfully restored landmarks and lively modern streets.
Once a powerful trading hub known as the "first among equals" of the Hanseatic League, Lübeck today offers visitors a blend of maritime heritage, literary legacy, and relaxed northern German charm. The historic harbor warehouses now house museums, shops, and restaurants, while the seaside resort of Travemünde is just a short trip away.

Planning Tips
- Use the Schleswig-Holstein-Ticket — for groups of up to five, this day pass covers regional trains and buses across the state and into Hamburg.
- Beware the Deutschlandticket subscription trap — the nationwide €63 monthly pass is subscription-based; cancel carefully if your trip spans a month boundary.
- Rent a bike — cycling is popular and often faster than driving, with dedicated bike lanes on most main roads, though old town streets are cobbled.
- Stay near the Hauptbahnhof or ZOB — the central train and bus station is a short walk from the Altstadt and the hub for local and regional travel.
