Ludhiana is the most populous city in Punjab and a major industrial and agricultural hub, famously nicknamed the "Manchester of India" for its prolific hosiery production. Situated on the banks of the Sutlej River along the historic Grand Trunk Road, it lies roughly 100 km from Chandigarh and 140 km from Amritsar, making it a significant landmark in the region.

The city blends a strong commercial character with green spaces and cultural sites. While not a traditional tourist destination, Ludhiana attracts visitors with its modern shopping malls, cinema complexes, and heritage attractions like the Punjab Agricultural University campus, one of the finest agricultural universities in India, and its on-site museum.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 12, 2026
  • Getting There: The nearest airport with wider flight connections is in Chandigarh (about 100 km away). Direct trains like the superfast Shatabdi Express connect Ludhiana from Delhi in around 4 hours.
  • Getting Around: Auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws are the most common way to navigate the city. A local bus service also operates along main routes, but expect heavy traffic in dense market areas.
  • Dining: Sample authentic Punjabi cuisine — don't miss Chawla's Cream Chicken, Babas Chicken, Friends Dhaba, or Shekhupuria's Dhaba. For dessert, seek out Basant's Kulfi or Dhodha Sweet House.
  • Shopping: The city is the national hub for woolens. Explore wholesale hosiery markets like Bajwa Nagar and Dal Bazaar for value, or visit Mall Road and Rani Jhansi Road for traditional jewelry and branded stores.
  • Health and Comfort: If visiting in winter (Nov–Jan), pack warm layers for chilly nights. In summer (May–Jun), carry a water bottle, wear sun protection, and plan around the midday heat.
