About this place
Lublin is the largest city in eastern Poland and the capital of Lublin Voivodeship, a compact mid-sized city with its own distinctive Lublin Renaissance style. Its historic Old Town is designated as a national monument, and the city buzzes with youthful energy — it was a European Youth Capital finalist and is competing for the European Capital of Culture 2029 title.
Lublin played a pivotal role in Polish history as the site of the Union of Lublin, which united Poland and Lithuania into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was a royal city, home to the Crown Tribunal — the highest court of appeal for the nobility — and a centuries-old crossroads of cultures, including a significant Jewish community. Today it's a major university hub with a population of approximately 328,300, easily reached from Warsaw in about 1.5 hours by train or car.

Things to Do
- Ride the tourist trolleybus — In summer, a special heritage route runs on Sundays from Kraków Gate using a classic Soviet-era ZIU trolleybus, passing Majdanek, the Cathedral, and Old Town with virtual guide commentary (5 zł per ride).

- Cheer for Motor Lublin — The local football club was promoted to the top-tier Ekstraklasa in 2024. Catch a match at their stadium 500 m west of the main railway station.
- Go ice-skating — Head to the Icemania rink (buses 26 or 31, trolleybuses 150, 152, 155, or 158 from the city center).

Planning Tips
- Use public transit tickets correctly — Buy single-ride or 24-hour tickets from kiosks or on board (exact change). Validate immediately upon boarding; each ride or transfer needs a fresh ticket.
- Avoid unregulated taxis at stations — Use official taxi stands or call companies like Damel, Dwojki, or MPT. Apps for platform-based drivers work well too.
- Time your visit for local flavors — Seek out cebularz in bakeries, regional pierogi at places like Sielsko Anielsko on Rynek, and local Perła beer on tap in Old Town pubs.
- Watch for pickpockets on transit — Be extra vigilant on buses and trolleybuses serving the railway station and central bus terminal.
- Walk the Old Town and beyond — Most city-center attractions are pedestrian-friendly; save transit for reaching Majdanek or outer districts.
