About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Los Mochis is a coastal agricultural city in Sinaloa, best known as the western gateway for the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railway (El Chepe), the spectacular train journey through the Copper Canyon. With a population of about 260,000, it serves primarily as a transportation hub linking air, rail, and ferry routes across the Sea of Cortez to Baja California.

The surrounding valley is one of Mexico's most productive farming regions, famous for its mangoes and other crops. While the city itself offers a modest collection of parks, museums, and local sporting events, most travelers use Los Mochis as a launch point for the canyon train or the La Paz ferry.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Book El Chepe in advance — the train operates three days per week from Los Mochis; plan your itinerary around the Monday, Wednesday, and Friday departures.
  • Use taxis to get around — taxis are plentiful and economical; driving yourself is not recommended.
  • Pack light layers in winter — days are warm but evenings and early mornings can be noticeably cooler than the tropical afternoons.
  • Fly domestically — as of early 2023, Los Mochis airport only serves domestic routes from cities such as Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Tijuana.
  • Check ferry schedules — if planning the crossing to La Paz, confirm current timetables for the Topolobampo ferry and arrange a 30-minute taxi to the docks.
