About this place
Livorno is a historic port city on the Tyrrhenian coast of Tuscany, long known to English-speaking travelers as Leghorn. It remains one of Italy’s busiest western ports and a popular entry point for cruise passengers heading inland to Pisa and Florence. The city itself is flat, walkable, and shaped by canals and Medici-era fortifications, with a character quite distinct from Tuscany’s hill towns.

Things to Do
- Ride the Funicolare di Montenero — one of the few historic cable railways still operating in Italy, climbing to a hilltop sanctuary with views over the coast.
- Cycle the flat city streets — Livorno and its surroundings are famously level, making biking a popular way to explore the center and the Venezia quarter.
- Try cacciucco and riso nero — the city’s signature fish stew and squid-ink black rice risotto are essential local dishes, best enjoyed at a traditional trattoria.
- Walk the canals of the Venezia district — this compact quarter of waterways and bridges offers a quieter side of Livorno, easy to explore on foot.
- Finish a meal with ponce alla livornese — a warm, coffee-and-rum drink that’s a local specialty.

Things to See
- Quattro Mori (Monument of the Four Moors) — the city’s most famous landmark, a bronze statue group honoring Grand Duke Ferdinando I.
- Fortezza Nuova (New Fortress) — built by the Medici to reinforce the city’s defenses; the top offers good canal views even though much of the interior was lost in World War II.
- Old English Cemetery — the oldest English burial ground in Italy, open by reservation, reflecting Livorno’s historic role on the Grand Tour route.
- Duomo San Francesco di Assisi — the city’s main cathedral, central and easy to include in a walking tour.
- Livorno’s municipal museums — several small museums cover art and local history; check current hours before visiting.

- July–August — the warmest stretch, with highs reaching around 34.5°C; best for travelers who tolerate heat and busy port days well.
- Mid-May through early October overall — this 145-day window delivers consistently good weather for walking, cycling, and ferry or cruise arrivals.

Planning Tips
- Use bus 1 from the station to the port — a €1.50 ticket covers 75 minutes of travel and is the most economical way for self-reliant cruise passengers to reach trains onward.
- Book ferries early in summer — routes to Sardinia, Corsica, and Sicily can sell out; Corsica Ferries also runs a weekly summer sailing from l’Île-Rousse.
- Choose Florence or Pisa for a one-day cruise stop — combining both in a single day rarely works well; pick one and travel by train from Livorno Centrale.
- Park outside the center — several large parking areas are available, and many hotels offer guest parking; driving in the historic core is best avoided.
- Reserve the Old English Cemetery ahead — visits are by reservation only; contact the Misericordia or the Livorno delle Nazioni association before you go.
