About this place
Lishui, whose name is properly pronounced "líshuǐ," is a city with deep historical roots in southern Zhejiang province, tracing its founding back to 589 AD. Once known as Chuzhou, it served as the wartime administrative capital of unoccupied Zhejiang during the Sino-Japanese War. Today, it offers a blend of ancient mountain paths and a refreshingly clean, laid-back urban environment.
Visitors often notice the notably better air quality here compared to many other Chinese cities, along with a more relaxed pace of life and particularly careful driving. The city's modern identity was consolidated in 2000, and it now serves as a regional center with easy high-speed rail connections to major hubs like Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Wenzhou.

Planning Tips
- Plan your airport transfer — Lishui has no airport. The quickest connections are via Wenzhou (35 min by bullet train) or Hangzhou (1.5 hrs). Shanghai is a 3-hour train ride from Hongqiao Station.
- Carry cash for daily needs — international cards are not widely accepted. The most reliable ATMs for foreign withdrawals are from ICBC, CCB, and Bank of China.
- Prepare for practical toilet situations — while larger venues often have Western-style toilets, smaller places may only have squat options. Carry your own toilet paper and hand soap, and be mindful that many toilets cannot handle flushed paper.
- Navigate the city with ease — public buses are frequent and cost just ¥1.5 for most routes. For taxis, have your destination written in Chinese characters to show the driver.
