About this place
Linyi (临沂 Línyí) is a historic city in southeastern Shandong Province, China. It is recognized as a regional central city and a modern industrial and trade hub, as well as a trade and logistics center. With a resident population of about 11 million as of 2020, Linyi is a second-tier city known for its waterfront features and livable environment.
Linyi is one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization, with roots going back to the Shang Dynasty. The area was home to the states of Tancheng, Ju, and Fei during that period. The city is also notable for its historical figures — thinker Xunzi, sages Zengzi, Zhuge Liang, and Wang Xizhi, calligrapher Yan Zhenqing, and inventor of bead calculation Liu Hong were all born or lived here. Notably, the bamboo slips of "The Art of War" and "Sun Bin's Art of War" were unearthed in Linyi.
Today, Linyi offers a blend of deep historical heritage and modern urban life. Its sprawling riverfront parks, shopping plazas, and local culinary specialties make it a distinctive destination for travelers exploring Shandong Province.
