About this place
Lijiang is a small city in Yunnan Province whose UNESCO-listed old town is the cultural heart of the Naxi people. Built where the Jade River splits into three branches, the historic center is threaded with canals and stone bridges that give it a distinctive, picturesque character. Though the town draws heavy tourism today, its streets still showcase Naxi embroidery, a unique hieroglyphic writing system, and traditional wooden architecture.
The Mu family ruled the area for roughly 500 years starting in the late 13th century, and their former palace remains a major attraction. After extensive rebuilding following a 1996 earthquake, most visitors see a city of well-restored traditional buildings. Crowds and commercial bustle are facts of modern Lijiang, but the blend of minority culture, mountain scenery, and historic lanes makes the journey worthwhile.

Best Time to Visit
- March–May — spring delivers comfortable daytime temperatures, low rainfall, and roughly 10+ hours of daily sunshine; ideal for walking the old town and day trips.
- October–early December — autumn stays similarly mild and dry with slightly lighter winds and less cloud cover than spring, offering excellent sightseeing weather.
- Avoid July–August — summer is the rainy season, with higher humidity and the biggest chance of wet days disrupting outdoor plans.
- Winter (December–February) — nighttime temperatures dip sharply; heated rooms or heated mattress pads become essential, though daytime remains clear and crisp.

Planning Tips
- Acclimatise sensibly — if flying in from sea level, consider a stop in Kunming (2,000 m) first, or plan a relaxed first day to adjust to 2,400 m.
- Carry your address in Chinese — taxis often have trouble finding guesthouses; have the hotel phone number ready so a cart porter can meet you at the old town gates.
- Watch your step — cobblestones turn slippery when it rains, and many bridge edges lack railings; sturdy, flat shoes help prevent accidents.
- Shop outside the old town for everyday needs — Dragon Life Supermarket near South Gate or Good Mood Supermarket near Black Dragon Pool’s north entrance offer fairer prices.
- Pack or buy warm clothing before winter — cheap hats and thermals are available on the road just outside the old town by the waterwheel, often at far lower prices than inside.
