About this place
Liaoyang is one of Liaoning province’s oldest settlements, tracing its origins back over 2,400 years. Once the regional capital of Liaodong and briefly the seat of the Late Jin dynasty under Nurhachi, the city today is an intriguing stop between its larger neighbors Shenyang and Anshan. Remnants of an imperial palace built in 1621, along with parts of the old city walls and gates, still survive and hint at its historical importance.
While Liaoyang’s early 20th-century role in the Russo-Japanese War and its modern heavy-industry base give it a layered character, leisure travelers come for the ancient architecture and the manageable, unhurried pace. Its compact layout and straightforward train and bus links make it practical for a day-trip or an overnight on a longer Liaoning itinerary.

Things to See
- Remnants of Dongjing (East Capital) palace — Nurhachi’s short-lived imperial capital from 1621. A few surviving walls and gates still mark the 900m-by-840m site.
- Liaoyang’s ancient city walls — sections dating back to the city’s time as the major Liaodong centre. The wall was originally about 11 metres high with two gates on each side.
- Russo-Japanese War battlefield sites — the 1904 Battle of Liaoyang is commemorated across the area, giving history buffs a reason to linger.
