About this place

Last updated Aug 22, 2026

Leverkusen is a modern industrial city in western Germany’s Cologne Lowland, best known as the home of the Bayer chemical and pharmaceutical giant. Its identity is closely tied to the company, which has shaped the city’s growth, employment, and even its most famous export: the Bayer 04 Leverkusen football club. With over 160,000 residents, the city is a composite of formerly independent settlements like Wiesdorf, Opladen, and Schlebusch that merged over the course of the 20th century.

The city’s layout is decentralized, with Wiesdorf serving as the functional center. Its location between Cologne and Düsseldorf makes it a convenient base for exploring the wider Rhine-Ruhr region, though Leverkusen itself is a quieter, more workaday destination than its vibrant neighbors.
