About this place
Latakia is a historic Mediterranean port city and a major commercial hub on the Syrian coast. The city has roots stretching back to Ancient Greek times, and today presents a modern face with white stucco highrises, palm-lined streets, and a lively corniche. As home to one of Syria's largest universities, Latakia has a relatively progressive atmosphere and a diverse population of Christian, Alawi, and Sunni inhabitants.
The city serves as an excellent base for exploring a region of remarkable geographic diversity. Within easy reach, green mountains give way to sandy beaches, and important archeological sites like Saladin Castle and the ancient ruins of Ugarit make compelling day trips. While the city center itself is not very walkable due to distances between attractions, a good bus system and plentiful taxis make getting around straightforward.
