About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Laredo sits on the banks of the Rio Grande along the South Texas Plains, directly across from its larger Mexican twin, Nuevo Laredo. Together called Los Dos Laredos, the cross-border metropolitan area blends deep Hispanic heritage with its role as a commercial and agricultural hub.

Founded in 1775 and governed under seven national flags, Laredo today is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. Visitors experience a distinctive border-culture mix of Southwestern and Mexican cuisine, lively import markets, and access to the wildlife-rich brush country of South Texas.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Arrive by car via I-35 — Interstate 35 runs directly into the city as the U.S. leg of the Pan American Highway; car rental is the most attractive way to navigate Laredo's spread-out attractions.
  • Use El Metro for local transit — The municipal bus system operates scheduled routes and paratransit services, but driving gives you more flexibility for wildlife areas outside the center.
  • Cross into Nuevo Laredo easily — The border is walkable; bus travelers can also find more Mexican city connections by crossing into Tamaulipas.
  • Greyhound connects major hubs — Daily bus services arrive from Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, and Monterrey, making car-free arrival possible.
  • Time your feasting — Southwestern and Mexican restaurants are abundant; shop for crafts and souvenirs along San Bernardo.
