About this place

Lanzhou (兰州; Lánzhōu) is the capital of Gansu province in northwestern China. This industrial city of about 4.5 million people is situated on the shores of the mighty Yellow River. Once one of China's most polluted cities, Lanzhou has seen improvements in air quality in recent years. Its elevation sits at 1,570 meters, giving it a distinct high-altitude feel.

Historically, Lanzhou was a major stop on the ancient Silk Road, known in its heyday as the "Golden City." From the 5th to the 11th century, it flourished as a center of Buddhist learning. The city acquired its present name during the Qing Dynasty in 1656. Until the 19th century, it was the primary crossing point on the Yellow River, using a unique bridge made from a chained flotilla of boats. Today, Lanzhou blends its storied past with modern development, offering visitors a gateway to Gansu province's desert landscapes, Buddhist grottoes, and Tibetan-border cultures.

  • Fly into Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport, then take the dedicated commuter train (50–55 min) or shuttle bus (just over 1 hour) to the city center.
  • High-speed trains connect Lanzhou to Xining (1 hr 15 min), Xi'an (4 hr), and Beijing; conventional trains serve longer routes.
  • Use Metro Line 1 (blue) for east–west travel across the city, or the #1 Bus for a useful route between Lanzhou Station and Lanzhou West Station.
  • For visa extensions, visit the administrative building at the southwestern corner of Qingyang Lu & Jiuquan Lu (4th floor, "Min'an Mansion"). Bring a proof of lodging; photos and passport copies are handled digitally. Processing takes 3–4 working days.
  • Look for halal-friendly restaurants serving Lanzhou beef noodle soup, a specialty of the Muslim Hui community.
  • Bring layers: even in summer, the high elevation can bring cool evenings.
