About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Lankaran is a historic city in southeastern Azerbaijan, set between the Caspian Sea and the Talysh Mountains. With roots stretching back to the Bronze Age, it served as the capital of the Talysh Khanate and later became an important stop on caravan routes linking East and West. Today, it rewards visitors with a blend of cultural heritage, regional cuisine, and lush subtropical landscapes.

The city offers a distinctly local experience: explore lively bazaars, sample famous Lankaran tea and lavangi chicken, or relax in a traditional teahouse. Day trips lead to hot springs in the foothills and mystical “pirs” scattered through the surrounding countryside, making Lankaran a worthwhile addition to any Azerbaijan itinerary.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Pack a flashlight — Street lighting is inconsistent, especially in autumn and spring when power cuts occur.
  • Learn a few phrases — Know key words in Azerbaijani, Turkish, or Russian for directions, emergencies, and ordering food.
  • Bring cash — ATMs are limited (mainly near the International Bank of Azerbaijan branches), and small vendors will not take cards.
  • Use landmarks for taxis — Street addresses are rarely used; direct drivers to well-known spots like the Big Bazaar or Gala Hotel.
  • Try regional souvenirs — Stock up on Lankaran tea, Talish knitted socks (tohuma jorab), and woven zanbil baskets before leaving.
