About this place
Lamia is the capital of the Phthiotis region in West Central Greece, set on the slopes of Mount Othrys near the Spercheios River. With a municipal population of about 66,657, it acts as the agricultural hub for the surrounding fertile countryside. The city’s name may trace back to the mythological Lamia, daughter of Poseidon and queen of the Trachineans, or to the Malians who once inhabited the area. Its position almost midway between Athens and Thessaloniki makes it a convenient stopping point on a mainland journey.
