About this place

Last updated Jun 8, 2026

Lagos Island is the historic and commercial heart of Lagos, Nigeria. This central business district is characterized by high-rise buildings and a bustling urban energy. The island is home to many of the city's largest wholesale marketplaces, such as the popular Idumota and Balogun markets. It also contains key cultural and historical landmarks, including the National Museum of Nigeria, a Central Mosque, Christ's Cathedral (CMS), the Oba Palace, and Tinubu Square — a site of historical importance where the 1914 Amalgamation ceremony that unified the North and South protectorates to form Nigeria took place.

To the east, Ikoyi is connected to Lagos Island by a landfill and offers a more upscale experience with a great number of hotels, nightclubs, a recreational park, and one of Africa's largest golf courses. Once a middle-class neighborhood, it has evolved into a fashionable residential enclave for the upper-middle to upper classes. Victoria Island, connected to Ikoyi by a bridge over Five Cowrie Creek, is another prominent area nearby.

Lagos Island serves as a vibrant hub for commerce, culture, and history, though visitors should be prepared for the area's intense energy and humidity.
