About this place

Last updated Jul 26, 2026

La Paz is the world’s highest national capital, set dramatically in a canyon carved by the Choqueyapu River and overlooked by the sprawling satellite city of El Alto on the altiplano above. Founded in 1548, the city spills down steep slopes from the airport at roughly 4,058 m above sea level to the more temperate, affluent neighborhoods at the bottom.

The city’s geography shapes daily life here — the lower you go, the milder the weather and the more prosperous the area. The central tree-lined Prado serves as the backbone of the downtown core, with vistas of snow-capped Mt. Illimani framing the skyline. High-altitude energy and Aymara culture infuse the markets, streets, and cable cars that connect the canyon to the plateau.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Acclimatize gradually — On your first day, rest, walk slowly, eat lightly, and prioritize sleep to minimize altitude discomfort.
  • Use radio taxis or ride-hailing — Always agree on a fare before boarding; Didi is the dominant ride-hailing app as of 2024. Avoid unmarked “gypsy cabs” at night.
  • Bring cash in good condition — U.S. $100 bills fetch better street exchange rates than cards. Inspect bills for authenticity and count your change carefully.
  • Cable car card for convenience — Buy a rechargeable Mi Teleférico card (Bs. 25 with Bs. 5 credit) to skip ticket queues, especially on busy market days.
  • Back up electronics — Laptop hard drives can fail at altitudes above 3,000 m; back up data before arrival and consider cloud storage while in the city.
