About this place
Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine, the country's largest and most vibrant city. It is a place where the golden domes of Orthodox cathedrals sit alongside royal palaces and the grey concrete of Soviet Brutalist architecture. Located in north-central Ukraine on the Dnieper River, the city is home to roughly 3 million people.
One of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, Kyiv traces its origins to at least the 5th century. It experienced a golden age as the capital of the medieval state of Kievan Rus', and later endured periods under Mongol, Lithuanian, Polish, and Russian rule before becoming the capital of an independent Ukraine in 1991. The city's layered history is visible in its architecture, from the Kyivan Rus' era to the Soviet period and modern Ukraine.
Travelers to Kyiv can explore a city that balances its deep historical heritage with a dynamic contemporary culture. The city's parks, religious sites, museums, and a lively food and nightlife scene offer a wide range of experiences. While the country is at war, the risk of being directly affected by attacks in Kyiv is considered low, though visitors should be prepared for air raid alerts and follow local guidance.
