About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

The New Territories cover a vast, mostly rural swath of Hong Kong that was leased from China in 1898. Often overlooked by visitors with limited time, the region rewards unhurried exploration with a mix of mountainous country parks, traditional villages, and newer residential towns where daily Hong Kong life unfolds away from the downtown skyline.

Landscapes vary dramatically across the region. The western and northern areas hold most of the population and are well connected by rail and bus, while the eastern Sai Kung Peninsula offers dramatic coastal scenery, steep peaks, and a relaxed waterfront town popular for its seafood and slower pace. Between the new towns you will find quiet cycling paths, ancient walled settlements, and sections of the long-distance MacLehose Trail.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Hike the MacLehose Trail — a long-distance footpath crossing the territories from Tuen Mun to Pak Tam Chung; Section 2 around Sai Kung is especially scenic.
  • Cycle the NT Cycle Track Network — roughly 60 km of dedicated, segregated paths linking Tuen Mun to Ma On Shan, with bike rental and drop-off available along the route.
  • Catch an evening in Sai Kung — the waterfront town combines seafood restaurants, pubs and a laid-back atmosphere that attracts both locals and visitors.
  • Visit the Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve — home to more than 200 butterfly species, many uncommon elsewhere in Hong Kong.
  • Tour a public housing estate — a half-day walk through complexes like Wan Tau Tong or Kwong Fuk reveals local markets, community halls and everyday Hong Kong life.

  • Sai Kung Peninsula — mountainous terrain and dramatic coastlines, with the challenging Sharp Peak (over 400 m) offering panoramic summit views.
  • Yan Chau Tong Marine Park — a protected coastal area valued for its seascapes and marine environment.
  • Traditional abandoned villages — linked by hiking trails in the north-east, these settlements provide a window into rural heritage.
  • Yuen Long's heritage bakeries — Hang Heung, Wing Wah and Tai Tung produce traditional pastries such as 'wife cake' and moon cakes, especially popular during the Mid-autumn Festival.
  • Local temples and rural life — scattered throughout the region, small religious sites and village settings contrast with the high-rise new towns.

Best Time to Visit

  • Mid-September to mid-December — moderate temperatures around 23.1°C, low rainfall and comfortable humidity make this the prime window for hiking, cycling and sightseeing.
  • Mid-autumn festival period — September or October brings moon cakes and traditional pastries; Yuen Long's bakeries are especially busy and atmospheric.
  • Avoid the summer wet season — high heat, heavy rain and rapid dehydration risk make strenuous outdoor activities challenging.
  • Winter (December to February) — cooler but generally pleasant; fewer crowds and still suitable for countryside walks if dressed in layers.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Get an Octopus card — it simplifies fare payment on MTR, Light Rail and buses, and often provides interchange discounts.
  • Check your MTR destination — when returning from Shenzhen on the East Rail Line, trains split for Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau; watch the platform displays.
  • Carry cash and water — once beyond the new towns, convenience stores are rare and small village shops may keep irregular hours.
  • Rent a bike for a day — shops in Sha Tin, Tai Po Market and Yuen Long charge roughly HK$30–150 depending on the bike; the segregated cycle network is safe and scenic.
  • Visit Sai Kung by express minibus — from MTR Choi Hung, minibus 1M (every 5 minutes) is the fastest public route; KMB buses from Sha Tin and Wu Kai Sha take about an hour.
