About this place

Last updated Aug 2, 2026

Kushiro is the largest city in eastern Hokkaido and serves as a gateway to Japan's largest marshland and the otherworldly landscapes of Akan National Park. Despite its size, the city retains a rural, unhurried atmosphere — think port-town seafood grills, sweeping wetland vistas, and a sparse local bus network that rewards visitors with a rental car. It draws birdwatchers and nature lovers year-round, most famously as the home of the endangered Japanese crane.

Things to Do

Last updated Aug 2, 2026
  • Robatayaki on the wharf — Grill your own seafood over charcoal at the outdoor stalls near the MOO, open from early spring through late fall.
  • Birdwatching — Look for endangered Japanese cranes year-round in the surrounding marshland, one of Kushiro’s most celebrated wildlife experiences.
  • Sushi-go-round — Join locals at the Hokkaido conveyor-belt chains Matsuriya or Nagoyakatei, where photo-filled menus make ordering easy even for non-Japanese speakers.
  • Sample local specialties — Try Kushiro’s famous whale meat (kujira) raw or cooked, or seek out Akkeshi oysters and Hokkaido-style soup curry around town.
  • Evening in Suehiro-cho — Explore downtown izakaya, karaoke boxes, and bars pouring Tantakatan, a shochu made with locally grown shiso leaves.

  • October to early November — A sweet spot for comfort: daytime averages around 11°C, low rainfall, and roughly half cloud cover, ideal for marshland walks and outdoor grilling.
  • Spring and autumn oyster festivals — Akkeshi, just east of Kushiro, celebrates its famed oysters twice yearly; local restaurants get a share of the harvest.
  • Winter crane watching — While temperatures dip well below freezing, snow-covered marshland and resident crane flocks make for dramatic wildlife photography.

Planning Tips

Last updated Aug 2, 2026
  • Rent a car — Public buses are infrequent and signposted only in Japanese; pick up a rental at the airport or downtown for easy marshland and lake access.
  • Book the limited express — The Ozora train from Sapporo requires mandatory seat reservations and takes about four hours; six departures daily.
  • Use photos to order — Menus at many local sushi and izakaya spots are Japanese-only but heavily illustrated; pointing and polite gestures go a long way.
  • Budget for cover charges — Most downtown bars add a roughly ¥500 entry fee, with individual drinks priced similarly.
