About this place

Kure is a historic port city in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, known for its deep maritime heritage. As the third-largest city in the prefecture, it served as a major base for the Imperial Japanese Navy and today hosts a significant portion of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The city’s waterfront district, a short walk from the main station, is anchored by two prominent naval museums.

Beyond the city center, Kure administers several islands in the Seto Inland Sea, including Ōsakishimojima, offering a mix of urban history and coastal scenery. Its proximity to Hiroshima makes it an accessible day trip or a quieter base for exploring the region.
