About this place
Kurashiki is one of Japan's most beautifully preserved merchant towns, offering a rare glimpse into the country's Edo-period commercial life. Sitting along a scenic willow-lined canal at the foot of Mt. Tsurugata, the city's Bikan Historic Area centers on a collection of white-walled storehouses that once traded in rice and textiles — and later became known for textile production after the Meiji Restoration. Because Kurashiki escaped major damage during World War II, many of its original mills and shops remain intact, open to visitors as museums, galleries, and boutiques.
The canal district is especially atmospheric at night, when lanterns illuminate the water and the daytime crowds thin out. While the surrounding city is a typical modern Japanese jumble of concrete, the Bikan area is a rare place where you can walk through a working, lived-in piece of old Japan — not just temple grounds, but the storefronts and warehouses that anchored everyday life. Staying overnight is well worth it to experience the quiet charm of the canal at dawn and after dark.

Planning Tips
- Stay overnight in the Bikan area — an overnight stay lets you enjoy the canal at dusk and early morning, escaping the midday crowds that arrive from Okayama.
- Use the bus between Kurashiki and Kojima — if you don't have a rail pass, the direct bus is cheaper and more convenient than the train, stopping near both the Bikan district and Jeans Street.
- Check museum schedules before booking Monday trips — the majority of Bikan-area museums close on Mondays, so plan indoor visits for other days.
- Consider a rentacycle in Kojima — cycling is the best budget-friendly way to reach the Shimotsui area and Seto Ohashi viewpoints from Kojima Station.
