About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Kropyvnytskyi, the administrative heart of Kirovohrad Oblast in central Ukraine, sits on the banks of the Inhul River on the Dnieper Upland. Founded in 1754 as Yelisavetgrad, the city enjoyed a 19th-century golden age when industry and culture flourished — it was here that Ukraine’s first professional theater opened. Today the downtown area retains remnants of that era, with some historic buildings renovated and others undergoing restoration, while locals affectionately call their city “a little Paris” for its pre-Soviet architectural charm.

A key motorway junction with a train station on the Znamyanka–Pomoshnaya line, Kropyvnytskyi is not widely known as a tourist destination, but it rewards visitors with a walkable center, affordable dining, and a relaxed pace. It’s a good base for experiencing everyday Ukrainian life away from the major tourist hubs.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Overland arrivals only — with civil aviation suspended, plan to reach the city by train, bus, or car; international buses run from Chișinău.
  • Learn a few phrases — Ukrainian and Russian are widely spoken, and basic greetings go a long way outside the main hotels and restaurants.
  • Use public transport apps — routes and schedules are available via EasyWay, Google Maps, and local Telegram channels.
  • Try national dishes — don’t miss borshch, vareniki, and draniki (deruny) at the affordable central cafés.
