About this place
Krefeld is a mid-sized city on the Lower Rhine with about 234,000 residents. Its proximity to Düsseldorf makes it a practical, more affordable base for exploring the region while still offering its own distinct character.
The compact centre was laid out on a grand grid system and bears the nickname "Velvet and Silk City," a nod to its textile heritage. Today the economy includes heavy industry alongside traces of its historic Quaker connections — 13 families from Krefeld went on to settle the Germantown district of Philadelphia in the 17th century.

Planning Tips
- Use the tram network — SWKmobil trams fan out from the central station, and line U76 connects directly into the Düsseldorf light-rail system.
- Try Nappo — look for the locally loved nougat-and-chocolate confection, still sold in its 1930s-style packaging.
- Watch for construction — station-area bus stops are being modernised as of 2024, so check SWK for any replacement services during your visit.
- Connecting from the airport — if arriving at Weeze/Niederrhein, budget about an hour by bus and train to reach Krefeld Hauptbahnhof.
