About this place

Last updated Jun 11, 2026

Kowloon (九龍) is an urban peninsula on the mainland side of Hong Kong, directly across Victoria Harbour from Hong Kong Island's central business district. With over 2 million people living in an area of less than 47 km², it is one of the most densely populated places on the planet, offering a dizzying array of places to shop, eat, and sleep.

The name "Kowloon" means "nine dragons" in Cantonese, referring to the surrounding mountains and the emperor who counted them. Kowloon escaped some of the British colonial influences that characterise Hong Kong Island, giving it a more local feel. The main tourist hub is Tsim Sha Tsui (尖沙咀) at the southern tip of the peninsula, while further north Mong Kok (旺角) offers a huge choice of markets and shops packed into less than a square kilometre.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Enjoy afternoon tea in the lobby at the Peninsula Hotel — an elegant tradition that offers a taste of Hong Kong's colonial past, served daily from 2PM to 7PM (smart casual dress code).
  • Take a free tai chi lesson on the Avenue of the Stars, offered in English on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 8AM to 9AM.
  • Explore the unofficial red-light district in Mong Kok, known for its neon-lit streets, karaoke bars, and lively street food scene. Go in the evening when it's brightly lit, but be discreet with photography.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Use the MTR for quick travel across the harbour; avoid the Admiralty interchange during rush hour (5PM–7PM).
  • Airport buses like A21 and N21 are cheaper than the Airport Express and stop at many hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok.
  • In Tsim Sha Tsui, consider using the underground pedestrian tunnels connecting MTR stations to avoid traffic and heat.
  • For budget accommodation, arrive around 1PM when many guests have checked out. Bargain on price and pay only one night initially.
  • When shopping for electronics, look for price tags to avoid being overcharged, and compare rates at currency exchange places inside shopping centers (not at the entrance).
