About this place

Last updated Jun 14, 2026

Kota sits in the Hadoti region of southeastern Rajasthan, where the Chambal River winds through the landscape and gives the city a greener, less arid feel than much of the state. It’s a mid-sized industrial and educational hub with a population of about one million, known across India for its coaching institutes, yet it retains a strong connection to Rajasthani craft and cuisine.

The city makes a practical stop on the Delhi–Mumbai rail corridor and a gateway to the cultural riches of eastern Rajasthan. Visitors will find bustling bazaars, distinctive local textiles, and hearty regional food — all at a pace that feels more workaday than the polished tourist circuits further north.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 14, 2026
  • Sample Rajasthani street food — Grab a freshly fried kachori or samosa from a local stall; the spicy lentil- or vegetable-filled pastries are a Kota staple and make a quick, satisfying snack.
  • Savor a traditional thali — Seek out daal-baati-churma with gatte-ki-subzi, the classic Rajasthani combination of roasted wheat balls, lentil curry, sweet crumbled wheat, and gram-flour rolls in yogurt gravy.
  • Browse the bazaars for crafts — Spend an afternoon hunting for souvenirs in the city’s markets, where you can watch artisans resize lac bangles or pick up a colorful handcrafted puppet.
  • Dine in a village-style resort — Head to Haryali Resort for a meal in mud-built surrounds that aim to evoke a traditional Rajasthani village atmosphere.

Best Time to Visit

See Ranked Windows ↑
  • September 11 – December 12 — The longest and most comfortable window: temperatures average 25.1°C, with highs touching 39.2°C and lows around 7.2°C. Rainfall is negligible, skies are mostly clear, and light breezes make city walks pleasant.
  • February 11 – April 3 — A slightly shorter but equally agreeable stretch: typical highs reach 41.6°C, with cool mornings near 5°C. Even less rain and cloud cover than autumn, plus generous sunshine for outdoor plans.
  • Avoid peak summer (April–June) — Pre-monsoon heat builds rapidly, and daytime temperatures can be punishing for those not accustomed to the Rajasthani sun.
  • Monsoon months (July–August) — While greener, the city sees higher humidity and sporadic heavy showers that can disrupt road travel.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 14, 2026
  • Travel by train — Kota is a major junction on the Delhi–Mumbai line; a train from Jaipur takes about 4 hours, from Delhi roughly 7 hours, making it a scenic and reliable way to arrive.
  • Negotiate autorickshaw fares — Fix the price before getting into an auto-rickshaw or tempo; shared tempos are the cheapest way to move around the city on fixed routes.
  • Pack for heat, even in autumn — Daytime highs in the ideal travel windows can still reach 39.2°C or more; light cottons, a hat, and plenty of water are essential.
  • Bring room for shopping — Kota’s textiles and lac jewelry are lightweight and packable; leave some luggage space if you plan to visit the bazaars.
