About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Kostroma is a historic city on Russia's Golden Ring circuit, founded in the 12th century. It once served as a northern retreat for Muscovy's powerful elite, a legacy that left the city with a rich collection of art and architecture. The compact historic center, centered on Susaninskaya ploshchad, is where most visitors spend their time.

Beyond the center, Kostroma becomes a grey, industrial city that is largely off the tourist itinerary. The highlight for most travelers is the Hypatian Monastery, a must-see site that anchors any visit.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Getting there — overnight trains and the Lastochka express (about 5 hours) connect Kostroma to Moscow; daily buses run from Ivanovo, Yaroslavl, and Vladimir via Suzdal.
  • Getting around — Bus #13 shuttles between the main square and the Hypatian Monastery, while Trolleybus #2 links the main square to the train station.
  • Focus on the center — the historic area around Susaninskaya ploshchad and the monastery is compact and walkable; the industrial outskirts offer little for visitors.
