Old Kochi is the historic heart and primary tourist enclave of Kochi, comprising the atmospheric neighborhoods of Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, and the surrounding islands. Separated from the mainland city of Ernakulam by the vast Vembanad Lake, it offers a distinctly different pace — a walkable peninsula of colonial-era lanes, waterfront promenades, and a layered cultural heritage shaped by centuries of maritime trade.
Fort Kochi enchants with its neatly arranged streets lined by Anglo-Dutch architecture, boutique antique shops, and a relaxed, bohemian feel. Just to the south, Mattancherry buzzes with trading energy, home to a long-established Gujarati community that settled here during the 16th and 17th centuries, drawn by the lucrative spice trade.
