About this place
Kōchi is the relaxed capital city of Kōchi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, offering a blend of coastal scenery, sacred mountains, and a famously rich food culture. The city is compact and easy to navigate by tram, bus, or rental bicycle, with the JR Dosan Line connecting it to Okayama and beyond.
Most visitors come for the dramatic views at Katsurahama beach, the temples and botanical gardens of Mount Godaisan, and the chance to taste katsuo no tataki — the city's signature seared bonito dish — at its absolute freshest.

Things to See
- Katsurahama — Kōchi's famous coastal beach features a beautiful curved shoreline and was historically a popular spot for moon-viewing. Swimming is not permitted, but the scenic views are the main draw.
- Mount Godaisan — A holy mountain between downtown and Katsurahama, home to Chikurin-ji Temple, the Makino Botanical Garden, and a lookout point with panoramic views over the surrounding area.
- Chikurin-ji Temple — Located on Mount Godaisan, this temple is one of the key cultural stops on the island and part of the mountain's sacred landscape.

Best Time to Visit
- Mid-September to late November — The most comfortable window combines mild average temperatures around 17.8°C with moderate rainfall, ideal for temple visits and coastal walks.
- Autumn for food lovers — Late summer through early fall overlaps with the bonito season, when the fish are at their fattiest and katsuo no tataki is at its peak.
- Avoid midsummer heat — July and August bring high humidity and temperatures that can make outdoor excursions draining if you are not acclimated.

Planning Tips
- Getting around — The My-Yu Bus day pass (¥1000) connects JR Kōchi Station to Mount Godaisan attractions and Katsurahama, making it a convenient sightseeing loop.
- Dining reservations — Popular spots like Kuroson require bookings well in advance, especially for the acclaimed shio tataki; solo diners or couples might still find a seat on weeknights without one.
- Connectivity — The JR Nanpu Limited Express from Okayama reaches Kōchi in about 2½ hours and is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass, making it the most efficient rail entry from Honshu.
