About this place

Last updated Jul 13, 2026

Kluang is a lively town in central Johor, Malaysia, about 110 km north of Johor Bahru. Founded in 1915 as an administrative hub, it grew rapidly through rubber production and later diversified into agriculture, ceramics, and light industry. Today it balances modern shopping and dining with a relaxed, small-town character.

The town is perhaps best known for its Kluang Railway Station and the historic RailCoffee shop, which has been serving roasted coffee and kaya toast since 1938. The railway line still cuts through the centre of town, creating a distinctive rhythm to daily life. Surrounding countryside offers organic rice farms, a low-rise tea plantation, and one of Malaysia's largest goat and sheep farms, making Kluang an appealing base for agritourism day trips.

  • Late January to mid-March — this window offers comfortable temperatures (highs around 34.5°C, lows near 19.9°C) with lower daily rainfall, making it ideal for farm visits and walking tours.
  • June to early July — another relatively dry stretch with average temperatures around 26°C and lighter winds; good for enjoying the town's markets and outdoor café culture.
  • Weekday mornings — regardless of season, Monday-to-Friday mornings provide the quietest experience at attractions like the railway station coffee shop and the Monday flea market (Pasar Karat Tani).
  • Avoid public holiday peaks — hotels and popular restaurants fill up during Malaysian school holidays and festive seasons, so book ahead if visiting during Hari Raya or Chinese New Year.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 13, 2026
  • Use the train when possible — frequent KTMB services from Johor Bahru and direct ETS trains from Kuala Lumpur make rail the most convenient option; the station is right in the town centre.
  • Pack for tropical humidity — lightweight, breathable clothing, a rain jacket or umbrella, and comfortable walking shoes are essential for Kluang's warm, often overcast weather.
  • Start early to beat the heat — plan outdoor activities such as the Modern Agriculture Project or Gunung Belumut waterfalls for early morning to avoid the strongest midday sun.
  • Check market schedules — Kluang's pasar malam rotate by neighbourhood each day (e.g., Taman Sri Kluang on Friday, Taman Muhibah on Sunday), so note the schedule to catch the one nearest your accommodation.
  • Bring home local specialties — leave luggage space for Kluang coffee powder, Tong Huat pastries, dragon fruit wine, or ceramic pottery from Machap, all readily available in town shops and the mall.
