About this place
Klerksdorp is a substantial mining and agricultural city of about 186,000 people in South Africa's North West Province. Together with Rustenburg, it forms the economic heart of the province and serves as an important retail, medical, and educational hub for the surrounding region.
The city is historically notable as the oldest European settlement north of the Vaal River and played a role in the Second Boer War, including a decisive Boer victory at Ysterspruit. Today, while gold mining remains significant, the area is also a major agricultural center, producing maize, sorghum, groundnuts, and sunflowers, and is home to the largest agricultural co-op in the southern hemisphere.
