About this place
Klang is the royal town of Selangor, straddling the Klang River on Malaysia's west coast. While it rarely appears on typical tourist itineraries, the city rewards visitors with a deep food culture and a lively Indian shopping district. It makes an easy half-day escape from Kuala Lumpur, connected by commuter train and major highways.
Though Klang lacks the architectural landmarks of the capital, its Little India along Jalan Tengku Kelana is the largest Indian street in the country, and the surrounding area holds reminders of its tin-trading past. Most travelers come for the local flavors — Klang is the original home of bak kut teh and a gateway to excellent seafood in Telok Gong.

Things to Do
- Eat bak kut teh for breakfast — Klang is the birthplace of this Hokkien-style pork-rib soup, served with strong tea on the side. Sunday family outings for bak kut teh are a local institution, and shops near the railway station make it easy to sample.
- Go fishing at Port Klang — Cast a line at no cost from the port area. The setting is casual rather than polished, so it suits those who don't mind a working waterfront atmosphere.
- Explore Little India on foot — Stroll Jalan Tengku Kelana to browse saris, bangles, stainless-steel cookware, gold, and Indian sweets. The street is at its most vibrant during Deepavali, when elaborate light displays and festive crowds transform the area.
- Feast on seafood in Telok Gong — Take a car or taxi to this former coconut plantation on Pulau Indah for signature dishes like Wong Kam Crab (crab with duck egg yolk) and Marmite Crab. Try a glass of toddy, a fermented coconut drink, alongside your meal.

Planning Tips
- Pack rain gear regardless of season — Tropical downpours can arrive suddenly. An umbrella and lightweight rain jacket will serve you well in Klang at any time of year.
- Use the KTM Komuter train from Kuala Lumpur — Trains run directly to Klang station in about 50 minutes, and several famous bak kut teh shops are right near the station.
- Arrange private transport for Telok Gong — The seafood district at Telok Gong is not served by public transit, so book a taxi or drive if you plan to eat there. A car also makes town-wide exploration much easier.
- Reserve Little India for a dedicated half-day — The dense rows of shops reward slow browsing. Aim for a morning or late-afternoon visit to avoid the strongest sun and to see the market at full energy.
