About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Kisangani is the third-largest city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, set deep in the Congo Basin at the furthest navigable point of the Congo River. The city lies just upstream of the Boyoma Falls, a 100‑km stretch of cataracts, and its Swahili-derived name means “the city on the island” — a nod to the many waterways that weave through town.

Founded as Stanley Falls Station by Henry Morton Stanley in 1883, Kisangani has lived through profound chapters of Congolese history, from colonial trading post to flashpoint in the Second Congo War. Today it is a quiet, isolated commercial centre of over a million people, defined more by its rainforest surroundings and river lifeline than by visitor sights. Over 250 cultures coexist here, giving the city a notably diverse identity.

Leisure travellers will find an off-the-grid destination suited to experienced adventurers. The rewards are cultural authenticity, a genuine riverside rhythm, and access to one of the world’s great waterways — but infrastructure is limited, creature comforts rare, and arrival by boat, road, or plane demands patience and flexibility.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Soak up river views at Linoko Beach — a bar overlooking Tshope Falls serves local beer and offers one of the city’s most relaxing spots to watch the Congo River’s power.
  • Explore the central market — wander among vendors selling tropical fruit, vegetables, nuts, and freshly grilled fish or chicken from street stalls.
  • Cruise the Congo River — for the truly adventurous, board a ferry or barge heading toward Kinshasa; the multi-week journey is a gritty but unforgettable travel experience (choose your vessel with care).
  • Ride pillion on a motorbike — the city’s cheapest and most common form of motorised transport lets you see the town as locals do, although you will get dusty.

See Ranked Windows ↑
  • Late May through mid-July offers a window of slightly reduced rainfall: typical daytime highs reach 34.7°C with lows near 20.3°C, and daily precipitation averages only 2.7 mm.
  • December to late February is the driest season — rainfall drops to around 2.3 mm per day, daytime temperatures reach 38.6°C, and overnight lows stay a mild 19.4°C.
  • Avoid October if possible — it is historically the rainiest month, with heavy daily downpours and high humidity.
  • Humidity remains high year-round (around 86%), so lightweight clothing and rain gear are recommended no matter when you visit.
  • River travel on the Congo is more comfortable during the drier windows, when ferry decks are less swamped by rain.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • If arriving by air, expect to land at the small military airfield near downtown; private or UN flights occasionally use it — do not count on scheduled commercial service.
  • For a Kinshasa–Kisangani river journey, negotiate directly with the captain for a private room; plan for a 2- to 3-week trip and bring supplies.
  • Arrange vehicle hire a day or two in advance if you need a taxi; the drive to the airport currently costs roughly USD 20–40.
  • Most locals travel on foot or by bicycle; motorbike rides are cheap and plentiful for short trips, but expect dust and a firm grip.
  • Street stalls selling chicken and fish are the most reliable food option — bring snacks or special dietary items with you, as refrigerated goods are scarce.
  • The train south from Ubundu runs on highly erratic schedules; inquire locally and avoid building a tight itinerary around it.
  • Consult up-to-date travel advisories before attempting any overland route, and consider travelling with a local driver or convoy for added security.
