About this place
Gimhae (김해시), situated west of Busan in South Gyeongsang province, is often known simply as the location of Busan’s international airport. However, this city of over half a million residents holds a deep historical significance that rewards travelers who venture beyond its modern transit hub.
It was the capital of the ancient Geumgwan Gaya kingdom, a leading state of the Gaya Confederacy that thrived from 42 CE to 532 CE. Today, that rich past is brought to life through royal tombs, a dedicated national museum, and numerous archaeological sites. As a satellite city of Busan with its own industrial base, Gimhae offers an interesting blend of historical depth and authentic, everyday South Korean urban life.

Planning Tips
- Factor in traffic — commuting between Gimhae and Changwon can be heavy, especially through the Changwon Tunnel heading toward Changwon in the morning and back toward Jangyu in the evening.
- Use the light rail for airport access — the quickest public connection from Gimhae International Airport to the city center is the Busan Gimhae Light Rail; remember to purchase a separate ticket.
- Train travel via Busan — for long-distance rail, the nearest KTX high-speed station is Gupo in West Busan, rather than a station in Gimhae city center.
- Explore on foot — central Gimhae's historic sights, dining, and main district are easily walkable, making it manageable without relying on local buses for the core attractions.
