About this place
Kiel is the maritime capital of Schleswig-Holstein, sitting at the head of the Kieler Förde fjord. With roughly 250,000 residents, it functions as one of Germany's primary Baltic passenger ports and the eastern gateway of the Kiel Canal linking the Baltic and North Seas. The city’s identity remains deeply tied to the water — from its working shipyards with towering cranes to the sprawling sailing festival that takes over each June.
Much of Kiel was rebuilt in modern functional style after heavy wartime bombing, so visitors expecting a preserved medieval old town will find clean, contemporary streetscapes instead. What it lacks in historic charm it makes up for with a walkable waterfront, thriving café culture along Holtenauer Straße, and an easygoing rhythm well-suited to a relaxed city break.

Things to Do
- Kieler Woche (Kiel Week) — The world's largest sailing event transforms the entire city center into an international food, craft, and music festival in late June. Book accommodation well ahead, and expect waterfront road closures and big-name concerts nightly.
- Cycle the coastal route to Laboe — A popular flat ride leads from the city center to Laboe on the eastern shore, then across by ferry to Strande for the return leg along the western side. Bike rentals and a guarded parking garage are available at the main station.
- Ride the Förde ferries — The city’s public bus-and-ferry network lets you hop between waterfront points with excellent value day tickets. The Kleingruppenkarte group pass covers up to five adults for unlimited transit across the entire Schleswig-Holstein network after 09:00.
- Check the free event magazines — Monthly print titles Station and Ultimo and online guides list live music, club nights, and student-organized parties, including Thursday “Studentenparties” on campus from October to April.
- Swim or sail — Schilksee, the 1972 Olympic sailing village, sits at the northern edge of the city and offers marina access and waterfront accommodation for those wanting to get on the water.

- Kieler Förde waterfront — The long fjord forms the city’s natural stage, with shipyards and cranes on the eastern shore, ferry terminals in the center, and a sculpture-dotted promenade connecting the two.
- Nikolaikirche (Nikolai Church) — The area around this rebuilt church at the north end of Holstenstraße anchors the old town center and is surrounded by cafés.
- Holtenauer Straße — A busy outdoor shopping corridor lined with cafés and more upscale stores, especially near the Dreiecksplatz at its southern end.

Planning Tips
- Use the NAH SH app for transit tickets — Day and multi-day passes for buses and Förde ferries are available in the app, and the group ticket offers excellent value for families or small groups traveling after 09:00.
- Bring layers and a windbreaker — Even in summer, Baltic breezes keep temperatures moderate and cloud cover high; a light jacket makes waterfront evenings more comfortable.
- Book early for Kieler Woche — Hotels fill fast during the late-June festival, and large parts of the city center become pedestrian-only.
- Rent a bike for coastal exploring — The Donkey Republic app runs Sprottenflotte bike-share, and the main station’s Umsteiger hub offers secure parking and rentals ideal for the Laboe–Strande loop.
- Research events on Fördeflüsterer — For nightlife, live music, and one-off parties, this online guide is more accurate than static listings.
