About this place

Last updated Jul 20, 2026

Khouribga is a regional center in central Morocco, best known as the country’s “Phosphate Capital.” Its name translates to “red hamlet,” a nod to the distinct reddish soil that colors the landscape. Founded in the early 20th century after the discovery of nearby phosphate deposits, the city grew rapidly and today is the capital of Khouribga Province. While it is not a traditional tourist hub, its working-city character and mining heritage offer a different perspective on Moroccan life. The surrounding Béni Mellal-Khénifra region provides a quieter, more inland experience compared to coastal destinations.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 20, 2026
  • Arriving by air — the nearest major airport is Beni Mellal (BEM), roughly one hour away by private taxi or car hire.
  • Getting around locally — petite taxis run on meters and suit up to three passengers; city buses are an even cheaper option on main streets.
  • Cash and negotiation — taxi fares from the airport are negotiable; carrying Moroccan dirham in small denominations is helpful.
  • Shopping for souvenirs — look for djellabas, caftans, handcrafted pottery, and small items tied to the city’s phosphate-mining identity.
  • Embrace mint tea culture — atay b’naanaa (mint tea) is a staple of hospitality, typically served with plenty of sugar in cafés and homes.
