About this place

Khorramshahr is an inland port city in Iran's Khuzestan province, resting on the right bank of the Shatt al-Arab waterway. Located just north of Abadan, it serves as a strategic point near the border with Iraq. The city was heavily damaged during the Iran-Iraq War after being captured in 1980 and subsequently retaken in 1982, shaping much of its modern character.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 13, 2026
  • Plan station transfers — Arrange a taxi or local transport in advance to cover the distance from the northeastern train station to the city center.
  • Coordinate the Iraq ferry — The international river crossing to Basra is operated by Valfajr Shipping Company with multiple weekly sailings, so verify the timetable ahead of time.
  • Pack for strong sun — Even during the mild spring window, clear skies and high sunshine duration (39754.5 sec) require sun protection and water.
