About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Khimki is a mid-sized city in North Moscow Oblast that blends a prominent Soviet aerospace history with a modern role as a major commercial and residential hub. Sitting along the Moscow Canal and the Klyazma River, it is one of the most densely populated parts of the Moscow conurbation.

The historic core, Stariye Khimki, offers a glimpse of 1930s Stalinist architecture, while the surrounding areas feature classic dachas and large upscale shopping malls. Though primarily a commuter city, its distinct districts range from quiet forested neighborhoods to the fast-growing, modern Noviye Khimki residential blocks.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Getting around locally — A bike or a car is the most comfortable way to explore the city's spread-out districts.
  • Arriving from Moscow — Plan for long travel times. Suburban trains from Leningradskii station and marshrutkas from Rechnoy Vokzal or Planernaya metro stations are the main links, but all are subject to heavy passenger loads.
  • District focus — Direct your visit to the Stariye Khimki core for architecture and the forest area for a quiet stroll; bypass the dense Noviye Khimki residential blocks.
