About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Kharkiv is a major Ukrainian city in the northeast of the country, the second largest in Ukraine with a population of over 1.5 million. It sits on a hilly plain at the confluence of the Lopan, Udy, and Kharkiv rivers, about 100 meters above sea level. The city has a long history dating back to its founding in 1654 and served a stint as the first capital of Soviet Ukraine until 1934. Today it is known for its grand squares, parklands, universities, and a metro system that makes getting around straightforward.

Visitors will find a city of wide boulevards and green spaces, with Shevchenko Park and Gorky Park offering popular places to relax. The central Svobody Square is a focal point for festivals, concerts, and seasonal markets. Although the city is close to the front line and faces air raid alerts and a nightly curfew, its cultural calendar—including jazz and sci‑fi festivals, city birthday celebrations, and Christmas markets—shows the resilience of daily life.

Because airspace over Ukraine is closed, overland travel is the only way to reach Kharkiv. Once there, the metro, trams, and buses provide an accessible network, and many public transport options are free of charge. Be prepared to carry identification at all times and follow local safety guidance.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Because Ukraine’s airspace is closed, plan overland travel well in advance and confirm border‑crossing requirements.
  • Always carry your passport; men aged 18–60 should carry proof of foreign citizenship to clarify draft‑age obligations.
  • Know the location of the nearest shelter or basement; many metro stations, hotels, and public buildings maintain shelters.
  • Observe the 23:00–05:00 curfew and follow all instructions from police, military personnel, and checkpoints.
  • Never photograph soldiers, military sites, vehicles, or checkpoints, and do not share such imagery on social media.
  • Pack a power bank, extra batteries, bottled water, cash in small bills, and a small first‑aid kit in case of outages.
  • Check current local advice before traveling, as the security situation and curfew hours can change.
